I got... my new... camera! *clings to it* Nikon D50, and I'm madly in love with it x3 LOVE!!

Anywho, this is what's left of the dock down where I live. Hurricane Ivan decided it didn't need to stand any more. x3 Hehehe. Bad Ivan. Took out the damn gazebo too. Oh well! Sunset over the sound and what remains of the dock!

Wonderful shot!

One thing I will say is that it feels like it needs a bit more perspective, the struts seem a little bit too flat. That said, it would probably have ruined the great staggering effect.

It's absolutely breath-taking. It's amazing how some things that aren't the best are so beautiful. Hope it won't happen again though. Heh.

Next time shit goes down, wear stilts!! This way you won't go down with it, and you can walk all over it afterwards.

Thanks for the comment! I'm a novice photographer, so any suggestions on how to go about getting a better perspective on this shot?

You're welcome and not to worry, I'm still a novice to some extent myself :)

To get a sense of perspective you need to find angles that accentuate the depth of what you are looking at, giving lines of sight that lead away from or to you. This can be done by simple things like changing the height you are photographing from (brining in some close foreground can sometimes help give a photo a lot of depth) or the direction from which you take it.

A quick fix to having more perspective in a shot is to use a semi-wine angle lense and get closer to you subject, this can however distort the perspective a bit (closer things will have an exaggerated perspective) and you will also get a little barrel distortion (a sort of curving at the edges of the photo, not overly noticable on the 18-55 lense that comes with the d50 but it would be on wider lenses).
In the case of your photo it may also be as simple as finding a spot where there is just a little more light on those wooden struts so that it shows the depth on them which will make them look less flat.

If you got the 18-55mm lense with your d50 (I got a d50 a few weeks ago and I agree, they're great!) that should provide you with a wide enough lense to do play about with. My best advice (because I'm not good at giving it and I work more on gut feeling;)) is to play with the angle you shoot from and the angle of your lense.

Hope that makes some sense & helps.
